Upscale a PNG When the Edges Are Already Honest

PNG does not throw samples away to save space. If a PNG looks soft or stair-stepped, the damage happened before the file was saved, or the file was never a photograph.

Mode

Lossless is not the same as sharp

A PNG stores what it is given. A soft photograph saved as PNG is still soft. A nearest-neighbor enlarge saved as PNG is still a stair-step, only now the stairs are exact. Upscaling that file can rebuild a photographic edge. It should not be asked to invent a better letterform. Logos, icons, and screenshots full of type are the files to redraw or re-export, not the files to run through a photo model and hope the glyph survives.

Transparency is the other PNG habit. A cut-out product on a checkerboard, or a logo with a real alpha, may come back with a fringe if the model treats the transparent edge as a color. If the subject is a photograph of an object on a real background, you do not need the alpha, and a JPEG or WebP of that scene is a simpler input. If you need the cut-out, judge the fringe on the slider before you drop the result into a layout.

PNG files are often larger than the same picture as JPEG, and the upload caps are in megabytes as well as pixels. Guest uploads stop at 6 MB and a 2,000 px long edge. Free plan is 8 MB and 2,560 px. Pro is 20 MB and 4,096 px. Studio is 40 MB and 8,192 px. A huge PNG of a screenshot can miss the free cap even when the picture is simple. Crop to the subject, or export a JPEG of the photograph inside it.

When a PNG upscale is the right job

A scanned print saved as PNG, a product photo, a painting, a frame from a video that was exported lossless: these have photographic edges. 2× is the test and it is free to try three times a day. If the edge of the object holds and no new texture appears in a flat wall, 4× on Pro is the print-sized file. 8× on Studio is for a tiny original, and it is the pass most likely to invent weave and skin.

Do not denoise a clean PNG out of habit. Noise removal on a file that has no noise sands the grain you saved by choosing PNG. Unblur only if the picture is soft. The modes are separate so a clean file can stay a clean upscale. The preview is unmarked. Free pages show ads. Free downloads cap at 3,200 px on the long edge, which for a UI mock is often enough and for a poster is not.

Paid plans batch twelve or forty PNGs after one of them has survived the slider. A failed decode or a provider error returns the credit. Cancelling the subscription does not refund the fee. The PNG you uploaded and the result we stored are deleted after 24 hours, so the layout file lives in your project, not here.

A last look at the hard edge

A PNG of a photograph should gain a cleaner contour and should not gain a texture in the empty background. A PNG of a logo should probably not have been uploaded. If the silhouette grew a fringe, the alpha or the cut-out was the problem, and a JPEG of the same object on a real background is a simpler input. Large PNGs hit the megabyte cap before the pixel cap. Crop first. Guest is 6 MB, Free plan 8, Pro 20, Studio 40.

Lossless storage does not mean the picture was sharp when it was stored. Soft PNG, stair-step PNG, and screenshot PNG are three different jobs, and only the first two belong on this tool. The third belongs in the screenshot page, with the type left alone.

What to keep beside the slider

PNG will faithfully store a bad resize, a soft photo, or a logo. Only the photo should be enlarged here. Logos and UI type want to be redrawn. Alpha cut-outs can grow a fringe. If the subject sits on a real background, a JPEG or WebP of that scene is a simpler input than a checkerboard transparency. Watch the megabyte cap: guest 6, Free plan 8, Pro 20, Studio 40. A huge screenshot PNG can miss the free cap while containing very little photograph. Crop to the object. Then 2×. Flat areas should stay flat. A new texture in an empty background is the sign to keep the PNG you already had.

Three steps on this file

  1. 01

    Crop away the interface

If the PNG is a screenshot, keep the photograph and leave the type alone.

  2. 02

    Run 2× on the photograph

Look at a hard edge and a flat area. Stairs should soften without a new texture appearing.

  3. 03

Export the size you can defend

The free file is capped. The paid file is the full result. Both are deleted after a day.

Settings that matter here

  • A PNG of type is a drawing, not a restoration.
  • Alpha fringes show up against a contrasting background. Check one.
  • A large PNG can hit the megabyte cap before it hits the pixel cap.
  • JPEG pages cover the case where the blocks are the defect.

Where this shows up

A product cut-out

The object is real and the file is small. 2× tells you whether the silhouette holds before you buy a 4×.

A lossless scan

You already avoided JPEG. Denoise only the dust, then measure the print size before any upscale.

Limits and formats

JPEG, PNG, WebP, and AVIF decode on the server. HEIC from a phone needs to be exported to JPEG first. The preview is not watermarked. Guest and Free plan downloads are capped at 3,200 px on the long edge. Pro and Studio download the full file. Nothing on this site is an ad.

Questions worth asking first

Do you keep the alpha channel?

Judge the edge on the slider. The stored result is a WebP of the repair, and a hard transparency cut is a poor thing to invent.

Can I try this without an account?

Yes. Guests get 3 credits a day. 2×, denoise, and unblur cost one. Colorize costs two. 4× and face restore start on Pro. 8× is Studio.

Is the preview watermarked?

No. Guest and Free plan downloads are capped at 3,200 px on the long edge. Pro and Studio download the full file.

What if the job fails?

The credit is returned. A failed job is not charged. A finished file you dislike does not return the credit or the subscription fee.

How long do you keep the upload?

Uploads and results are deleted 24 hours after the job is created.

Is PNG decoded?

Yes. JPEG, PNG, WebP, and AVIF are the formats the server reads. HEIC and TIFF are not.
